I Miss Peeing In The River

I Miss Peeing In The River

I miss Enugu

– I miss the melodic Igbo Christian songs that blared from loudspeakers in marketplaces, and bus parks.
– I miss the jealous stares of the market women whose eyes wander, questioning why Mama Ebuka is selling more fish than everyone else.
– I miss the muddy waters that turn your eyes red when you jump into them to swim.
– I miss Friday, Tochi and Alusi and all the imaginary girlfriends we had while growing up.
– We miss arguing about who saw the colour of Justina’s pant first and the size of her waist.
– I miss the village river and I still laugh when I remember the day Jideofor almost drowned in it.
– I miss peeing in the river while all my friends were in it.
They did not know this. But a part of me believes they do too.
